Direct Proportion to Powers and Roots
When is directly proportional to , or : forming the equation, finding and unknown values, working out the effect of a change in , and deciding from a table which power it is.
Before you start
- Lesson 6.2: if , then ; one pair of values gives .
- Powers and roots: , , , and , so has two solutions, and .
Proportion to the Square of a Quantity
The area of a circle is . If the radius is doubled, the area is not doubled: it becomes , four times as large. The area is not directly proportional to , but it is directly proportional to , with .
Direct proportion to the square
is directly proportional to the square of , written , if , where is a constant.
Then is the same for every pair of values (with ), and it equals .
When is multiplied by 2, is multiplied by ; when is multiplied by 3, is multiplied by .
Example 1: A table for y = 3x²
For , complete a table of values for . Show that is the same for every pair but is not.
Solution
Square first, then multiply by 3: at , ; at , .
in every column, so with . But grows, so is not directly proportional to .
Look at the multipliers: from to , is doubled and goes from 3 to 12, four times as large; from to , goes from 3 to 27, nine times as large.
; for every pair, while .
The graph of is the curve of chapter 5. Drawn for , it starts at the origin and gets steeper as increases. It passes through the origin, but it is not a straight line, so is not directly proportional to ; it is directly proportional to .

Example 5: Pizzas
The price of a pizza is directly proportional to the square of its diameter. A pizza 20 cm across costs $8. Find the price of a pizza 30 cm across.
Solution
Let the price be $ for a diameter of cm: .
, so and .
When : .
By multipliers: the diameter is multiplied by , so the price is multiplied by : 2.25 × $8 = $18.
The 30 cm pizza costs $18.
The Effect of a Change in x
If is multiplied by a number, is multiplied by its square, by its cube and by its square root. So changes by that multiplier, whatever is.

A percentage change in is a multiplier too. "Increased by 200%" means the new value is 100% + 200% = 300% of the old, so is multiplied by 3, not by 2. "Decreased by 50%" means multiplied by 0.5; "increased by 10%" means multiplied by 1.1.
Example 7: Braking distance
The braking distance of a car is directly proportional to the square of its speed. The speed is increased by 200%. Find the percentage increase in the braking distance.
Solution
Let the speed be m/s and the braking distance m, so .
The new speed is , so the new distance is .
The increase is , which is of the old distance.
The braking distance increases by 800%: it becomes 9 times as long.
Example 8: Percentage decreases and increases
. Find the percentage change in when is (a) decreased by 50%, (b) increased by 10%.
Solution
(a) is multiplied by 0.5, so is multiplied by . The new is 25% of the old: a decrease of 100% − 25% = 75%.
(b) is multiplied by 1.1, so is multiplied by . The new is 121% of the old: an increase of 21%.
(a) decreases by 75%. (b) increases by 21%.
Example 9: Finding k from a difference
is directly proportional to . The value of when is 32 more than the value of when . Find when .
Solution
. When , . When , .
The difference is , so and .

Which Power? Deciding from a Table
Testing a table
Work out , , and in every column. The one that is the same in every column tells you the power, and its value is .
Or use multipliers: find two columns where is doubled. If is multiplied by 2, try ; by 4, try ; by 8, try ; by , try . Then check every column.
Example 10: Which power?
Is directly proportional to , or ? Find the equation.
Solution
Only is the same in every column: and the others too.
The multipliers agree: from to , is doubled and goes from 5.2 to 41.6, which is 8 times as large; from to , goes from 41.6 to 332.8, again 8 times.
, and .
Common Mistakes
- Doubling when is doubled in . Then is multiplied by 4.
- Taking "increased by 200%" as "multiplied by 2". It means multiplied by 3.
- Calling "9 times as large" an increase of 900%. The increase is times the old value: 800%.
- Multiplying before squaring. For at : , not .
- Dropping a solution. If can be negative, gives or .
- Testing in two columns only. Every column must agree.

- Find from one pair, write the equation, then find or ; gives when may be negative.
- If is multiplied by , then is multiplied by , or .
- Turn a percentage change into a multiplier first: an increase of 200% is × 3, a decrease of 50% is × 0.5.
- To decide the power from a table, test , , and in every column, or use the multipliers.
- The graph of for is a curve through the origin, not a straight line.
