Quadratic Expressions
What terms, coefficients and constant terms are; how to tell a linear expression from a quadratic one; and how to add, subtract and simplify expressions with terms.
Before you start
In Secondary 1 you learnt that an algebraic expression is made of letters and numbers joined by , , and , such as or , and that like terms have the same letters, so they can be added:
This chapter adds terms such as and . This lesson gives them their names and shows how to collect them.
Terms, Coefficients and Constant Terms
The parts of an expression joined by and are its terms. Each term takes the sign in front of it. In the terms are , , and .
Coefficients and the constant term
The coefficient of a term is the number that multiplies its letters, together with its sign. In the coefficient of is and the coefficient of is .
A letter on its own has coefficient , and has coefficient : and .
A term with no letter is the constant term. The constant term of is .
Example 1: Naming the parts
For the expression , write down (a) its terms, (b) the coefficient of , (c) the coefficient of , (d) the constant term. Then (e) write down the coefficient of in .
Solution
(a) Each term takes the sign in front of it: the terms are , and .
(b) The number multiplying is , sign included.
(c) means , so the coefficient of is .
(d) The term with no letter is .
(e) In , the term in is , so the coefficient is .
Terms , , ; coefficient of is ; coefficient of is ; constant term . In the coefficient of is .
What , and Mean
Just as , we write as , read " squared". It is not , which is . When , but .
Notation
, and .
: the square belongs to only, not to the .
the brackets make the square cover the whole term.
(not ), and because multiplication can be done in either order.
To find the value of an expression, put the number in place of the letter, in brackets when it is negative, and work out the square first.
Example 2: Finding the value
Find the value of (a) when ; (b) when ; (c) when .
Solution
(a) The square of is , and .
(b) means : square first, then take the negative. .
(c) The brackets square the whole of .
(a) ; (b) ; (c) . So and are not the same.
Linear Expressions
Linear expression in
A linear expression in is one that can be written as , where and are numbers and .
The highest power of in it is : there is a term in , and no , , or product of letters.
For example, (here , ), (here ), and are all linear in . In the same way is a linear expression in .
An expression can be linear in two variables. is a linear expression in and : each term is a number times one letter, or a number. It is the kind of expression in the equations of chapter 2. It is not a linear expression in alone, because it also has .
A number on its own, such as , is a constant. It has no term in (it is with ), so it is not a linear expression.
Quadratic Expressions
Quadratic expression in
A quadratic expression in is one that can be written as , where , and are numbers and .
The highest power of is . is the coefficient of , the coefficient of , and the constant term. or (or both) may be .
If and , the expression is , which is linear. If and , it is the constant .
For example, (, , ), () and () are all quadratic. We usually write the terms in descending powers of : the term, then the term, then the constant.
Example 3: Linear, quadratic or neither?
State whether each expression is linear in , quadratic in , or neither, and give a reason. (a) ; (b) ; (c) ; (d) ; (e) ; (f) ; (g)
Solution
(a) is with : linear in .
(b) with : quadratic in .
(c) has no term in : it is a constant, neither linear nor quadratic.
(d) Each term is a number times one letter, or a number, but there are two letters: linear in and , not a linear expression in alone.
(e) The highest power of is : neither.
(f) divides by ; it is not a number times or : neither.
(g) with : quadratic in .
Linear in : (a). Quadratic in : (b), (g). Linear in two variables and : (d). Neither: (c), a constant; (e); (f).
Example 4: Reading off , and
Write each quadratic expression in descending powers of and state the values of , and . (a) ; (b) ; (c)
Solution
(a) . There is no term in , so : , , .
(b) is already in descending powers. There is no constant term, so : , , .
(c) , , .
(a) : , , . (b) , , . (c) : , , .
Like Terms with Powers
Like terms
Like terms have the same letters, each with the same power. Only like terms can be added or subtracted, by adding or subtracting their coefficients.
| Terms | Like or unlike? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| and | like | both are a number times |
| and | unlike | has a different power in each |
| and | like | |
| and | unlike | , but |
| and | unlike | has no letter |
So cannot be simplified: its three terms are all unlike. And is not or ; it stays as it is.
Adding, Subtracting and Simplifying
To simplify, remove any brackets, collect the like terms together, and add or subtract their coefficients. Write the answer in descending powers.
Example 5: Collecting like terms
Simplify (a) ; (b)
Solution
(a) Adding is the same as subtracting :
(b) . The terms: . The numbers: .
(a) ; (b) .
Example 6: Terms in
Simplify
Solution
Subtracting is adding , and , so :
The terms: . The terms: .
To subtract a whole expression, put it in brackets. The minus sign in front changes the sign of every term inside:
Example 7: Subtracting a quadratic expression
Simplify
Solution
Remove the brackets; the minus changes every sign in the second:
terms: . terms: . Numbers: .
Example 8: The order of the words
Subtract from .
Solution
"Subtract A from B" means : we start with and take away .
Writing an Expression for an Area
Quadratic expressions arise naturally from areas: a length in times another length in gives a term in .
Example 9: A square and a rectangle
A square of side cm is placed next to a rectangle cm by cm, as shown (lengths in cm). Write down an expression for (a) the total area, (b) the perimeter of the whole shape. Say which is quadratic and which is linear.
Solution
(a) Area of the square cm². Area of the rectangle cm².
Total area cm².
(b) The whole shape is a rectangle cm long and cm high. Perimeter cm.
has highest power 2, so it is quadratic. is linear.
The area is cm², a quadratic expression; the perimeter is cm, a linear expression.
Common Mistakes
- Reading as . ; when , but .
- Squaring the sign in . When , , not ; only is .
- Adding unlike terms: is not or . It cannot be simplified.
- Calling a constant such as a linear expression. It has no term in .
- Calling "not linear". It is linear in two variables, and .
- Changing only the first sign when a bracket is subtracted: is , not .
- Writing "subtract from " as . It is .
