Expanding Two Brackets
How to expand a product such as or : each term in the first bracket times each term in the second, seen as the area of a rectangle and set out in a multiplication frame.
Before you start
In the last lesson you expanded a term times a bracket: and The term outside multiplies every term inside.
Signs: like signs multiply to give , unlike signs give . So and .
Why There Are Four Terms
Think of as the area of a rectangle with sides and . Cutting the sides at the signs cuts the rectangle into four pieces, one for each term of the first bracket with each term of the second.
Expanding two brackets
Multiply each term in the first bracket by each term in the second, then collect like terms.
The same comes from the distributive law used twice:
The rectangle needs , , and to be positive lengths, but the result is true for all values, including negative ones.
The Multiplication Frame
The multiplication frame (the grid method) sets out the same four products in a table. Write the terms of the first bracket down the left and the terms of the second along the top, each with its sign. Each cell is its row times its column. Then add the four cells.
Example 1: Expand
Expand .
Solution
As a rectangle, the four pieces are the four products:
In a frame: down the left, along the top.

|---|---|---|
Row : and . Row : and .
The two terms, and , lie on one diagonal of the frame and are like terms: .
Negative Terms
A term keeps its sign when it goes into the frame: gives the terms and . Each cell then follows the sign rules.
Example 2: The four sign patterns
Expand with a frame. Then compare it with , and .
Solution

The other three in the same way:
In each, the number term is the product of the two numbers, and the coefficient of is their sum: for , and .
The others are , and .
Example 3: A coefficient in front of
Expand .
Solution

, , , . Then .
Example 4: Without a frame
Expand .
Solution
Each term of the first bracket times each term of the second, in order:
The Number First, or a Negative First Term
The method does not change when a bracket starts with a number or with a negative term. Only the answer needs tidying: write it in descending powers of the letter.
Example 5: Expand

Example 7: Fraction and decimal coefficients
Expand (a) ; (b) .
Solution
(a) , , , .
(b) , , , .
The two terms cancel.
(a) ; (b)
Checking by Substituting a Number
An expansion is equal to the product for every value of the letter. So put a number, such as , into both. If the values differ, the expansion is wrong.
Example 8: Spot the error
Daniel wrote (a) and (b) Check each with , then correct it.
Solution
(a) Product: . Daniel’s answer: . Wrong: he multiplied only the first terms and the last terms, and left out and .
Correct: At : . ✓
(b) Product: . Daniel’s answer: . Wrong: , not .
Correct: At : . ✓
(a) ; (b)
Unknown Coefficients and Areas
Two expressions that are equal for every value of have the same coefficient of , the same coefficient of and the same number term. So we can compare them term by term.
Example 9: Find the unknown
Given that for all values of , find .
Solution
Expand the left side:
Number terms: , so .
Check the terms: . ✓
Example 10: The area of a rectangle
A rectangle is cm long and cm wide. Find an expression for its area, and its area when .
Solution
Area
When : . Check: the rectangle is cm by cm, and . ✓
The area is cm², which is cm² when .
Common Mistakes
- Multiplying only the first terms and the last terms: There are four products.
- Dropping a sign: in the terms are and , and .
- Adding the number terms instead of multiplying them: in the number term is , not .
- Forgetting to collect the two terms, or leaving the answer out of order: write , not .
- Writing as . A negative times a positive is negative: .
