Expanding Longer Products and Simplifying
How to expand products with more letters, a bracket of three terms, or a number in front of two brackets, and how to simplify sums and differences of products.
Before you start
In the last lesson you expanded two brackets by multiplying each term in the first by each term in the second:
The same rule expands every product in this lesson. What changes is how many products there are, and how carefully the signs must be kept.
Brackets with Different Letters
When the two brackets have no letter in common, none of the four products are like terms, so there is nothing to collect. Write the letters of each term in alphabetical order: .
Example 1: Four different letters
Expand (a) ; (b) .
Solution
(a)
(b)
(a) (b)
Example 2: In a frame
Expand .
Solution
| × | ||
|---|---|---|
The four terms are all unlike, so this is the answer. Note
Two Letters in Each Bracket
When both brackets use the same two letters, the products give terms in , and . The two terms are like terms (since ) and must be collected.
Example 3: Terms in , and
Expand (a) ; (b) .
Solution
(a) , ,
(b)
(a) ; (b)
A Bracket with Three Terms
More terms, more products
Each term in the first bracket multiplies each term in the second, however many there are. Two terms times three terms give products:
The frame simply gets another column.
Example 4: A frame with three columns
Expand
Solution
| × | |||
|---|---|---|---|
. Collect: and .
Example 5: Three terms in the first bracket
Expand and simplify .
Solution
Add the six terms: The like terms are and .
Sometimes only one term of the answer is wanted. Then find just the products that give that term.
Example 6: One coefficient only
Find the coefficient of in the expansion of
Solution
A term in comes from (a term in ) times (a number). There are two such products:
and .
Together: .
Check by the full expansion: ✓
The coefficient of is .
A Number or a Term in Front of Two Brackets
In three things are multiplied. Expand the two brackets first and keep the result in a bracket; then multiply every term by the number in front.
Example 7: A number in front
Expand (a) ; (b) .
Solution
(a)
(b)
Every sign changes, because is negative.
(a) ; (b)
Example 8: A letter in front
Expand .
Solution
Check with : , and . ✓
Sums and Differences of Products
A minus sign before a product
Expand the product inside a bracket first. Then remove the bracket: the minus sign changes the sign of every term of the expansion, not only the first.
Example 9: The difference of two products
Simplify
Solution
. The terms cancel.
Check with : and . ✓
Example 10: A term times a bracket, minus two brackets
Simplify
Solution
When everything with the letter cancels, the expression has the same value for every value of the letter. Expanding shows why.
Example 11: Always the same
Show that for every value of . Check it with .
Solution
and .
With : ✓
The and terms cancel, leaving for every .
Areas
Example 12: A path round a lawn
A rectangular lawn m by m has a path m wide all round it, as shown. Find, in its simplest form, an expression for the area of the path. Then find the area when .
Solution
The path adds m at each end of each side, so the outer rectangle is m by m, that is m by m.
Area of path outer area lawn area
When : . Check: the outer rectangle is m by m, area m²; the lawn is m by m, area m²; . ✓
The path has area m², which is m² when .
Common Mistakes
- Changing only the first sign after a minus: is not . Keep the expansion in a bracket until the minus has been applied to every term.
- Leaving out products when a bracket has three terms: has six products.
- Multiplying the number in front into both brackets: is not . The multiplies once.
- Not collecting the two terms: in , .
- Leaving the answer uncollected, such as Simplify fully: .

Key Points
- Every term of one bracket multiplies every term of the other; two terms by three terms give six products.
- Write the letters of each term in alphabetical order, and collect like terms such as and .
- With a number or term in front of two brackets, expand the brackets first, then multiply every term by it once.
- Keep an expansion that follows a minus sign in a bracket; the minus changes every sign inside.
- To find one coefficient, add only the products that give that term.
- Check by substituting a number into the question and the answer.
